I hope that is plastidip because, although I like the idea, the execution on this is simply appalling.
I don’t hate the idea of attacking it with plastidip but that off center stripe would be a no go for me unless it is removable. The wheel covers do look good in white though. I think I’d paint the steelies instead.
I hate to say it but a manual 178,000 mile 2005 Scion xA is not worth $3,300 private party. The amount of time it has been up for sale bears that out. And the stripes don’t give me confidence it has been driven and maintained properly.
Which is a shame because I love the color and I thought this car might be obscure enough that it would be a good deal. Probably make a great first car at a bit less than that.
It really seems pretty good all around though. Craigslist has been shockingly devoid of good cars lately. Dang used car shortage!

I sincerely hope that is plastidip and not spray paint.

The only explanation, is that they started on the hood, with it off the car.

I mean, consolation points for not painting over the logo at least.

And then they got to taping up the front grille and didn’t decide to start over?

It’s a small victory.

What’s the problem?
And yes, a practical
, fuel-efficient,
reliable Toyota hatchback is worth $3300 if it’s
in decent
condition and
can
pass inspection

the badge is in the centre
how?
how did they fuck up the striping on that end of the car?
i could kinda understand if they got the front right and then lost the plot as they had no point of reference...
but come on?

Look at it. It’s rattle can all the way. Which reminds me of this .

Yes, but I was hoping that fact that it is one of the most obscure Scions would drop the price even with the manual. It took a year for a manual but seemingly shockingly immaculate Toyota Matrix to sell at that price and it’s already been on the market for several months I think. And that’s with COVID used car prices.
Also, I thought it was too obvious to mention the stripe is off center and crooked.

That is undoubtably worse. Just. Wow.

I think at that point you move the badge to the center of the stripe obvs.

I have taught the beginning union graphics class a couple times and you would not believe what people think is a good way to do something. I like to see what their first instinct is and that usually tells me who will be good at it with minimal effort.

I have a boss at work who says it like that when someone new fucks up an easy graphic, not level is common.

Why you would pretend to know more than you do in front of people not impressed by an entry level knowledge in the field is beyond me. That just means yo u might be thrust into a situation you don’t know how to deal with because you weren’t trained for it.

Looks like they were huffing the paint and got a bright idea.

In the union they just look for apprentices that are interested in trying it, we have a phototex material for walls that is removable, experienced people can just peel it off and do it again easily. People want to do graphics because we don’t really lift anything and they leave you alone, but it takes a weird kind of skill that you generally have or don’t have the feel for. We would never give them something serious. I actually move them a lot because clients sign off on something and then change it when they see it in real life. I hate them.

I think the single racing stripe one side might be a better bet for the first time amateur.
I saw a Porsche Macan with one
red stripe offset
a while back that had obviously been self-applied (it didn’t line up over the tailgate gap.
..) But still managed to great from most angles.

Maybe some sort of alcohol was involved with the execution?

I didn’t even notice when this comment thread jumped posts. KINJA!
Basically don’t trust anyone with an important job. A noob will always mess it up no matter how much training they’ve had. It took me like a month at one of my old jobs to learn how to seat a drink mixer container properly on the finicky seal without any leaks. And that wasn’t even a very complicated thing to do. It just required knowing how to identify when you’ve messed it up.

To a 17 year old with his first car, yes. This would be cool in a high school parking lot but wouldn’t pass many other places.

I agree there. Off center stripes are better anyways. Especially if you have two of varying thicknesses. Hides mistakes well too.

Agreed

Off-center stripes I can deal with.
But they look like they were just not applied straight, which really bothers me for some reason.

The seats look pretty grungy and the headlights are clouded, this doesn't speak to me as a car that's been cared for in its life.

This is clearly an intentional stylistic choice because no one could screw up stripes that bad.

Our country is clearly a stylistic exercise because no single person could screw it up that bad.

I get the impression it might have been pretty okay before some teenager “improved” it after huffing paint. I don’t think I’d buy it at that price.
Still, sometimes cars can be very rough aesthetically and super solid mechanically. As long as the only time he’s done anything to the car is the stripes and outsourced the maintenance it might be good. 178k isn’t too many miles for those engines.

I think we all know the reason. Because most of us could do better in our sleep.
